Questions about Sworn Translation

What is a sworn translation?

A sworn translation is a translation performed by a sworn translator appointed by the Spanish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, and it holds legal or administrative validity before official entities in a country other than its country of origin. Only sworn translators are authorised to carry out this type of translations and to certify that they are faithful and accurate. I have been a sworn translator since 2001, under appointment number 1941.

What types of texts usually require a sworn translation?

Among the documents most frequently translated by sworn translators are contracts, academic certificates, medical certificates, criminal records, powers of attorney, civil registry documents, last wills and testaments, court decisions, visa documents, and residence permits, to name just a few. A more comprehensive list can be found in the Services section.

Do you only carry out sworn translations from English into Spanish?

Generally, it is recommended to translate into your native language. For this reason, most of the translations I perform are from English into Spanish. However, in certain cases, I also translate from Spanish into English drawing on my extensive experience with specific types of documents. When I do so, I always have my translations reviewed by a native English colleague to ensure accuracy.

If you require a different language combination, please do not hesitate to contact me. I collaborate with a trusted network of highly-qualified translators to whom I can refer you.

Do I need to provide the original document?

No, you don’t. I just need a scanned copy in PDF format or a high-quality photograph of the document. Please, make sure all seals, signatures and numbers on both sides of the document are clearly visible.

How much is a sworn translation?

Sworn translations are a bit more expensive than other translations as they are intended for submission to official bodies. Each sworn translation is signed and sealed by me to certify that its content is a faithful and accurate rendering of the original document, which entails legal responsibility on my part.

The price is normally calculated on a per-word or per-page basis and depends on several factors, such as the length, urgency, and format of the document. For very short documents, a minimum rate applies. Simply send me the document you need translated and I will be happy to provide you with a free, no-obligation quote.

What if I need a copy of a sworn translation?

Occasionally, you may need to submit a sworn translation of a document to two or more different entities. If you receive an electronically-signed translation with a digital certificate, no additional copies are required, as the same electronic document can be used for multiple procedures, resulting in cost savings. If you require paper copies of a sworn translation, each copy will cost 25% of the translation price.

General Questions

Do you only translate from English into Spanish?

Generally, it is recommended to translate into one’s native language. For this reason, most of the translations I provide are from English into Spanish, except for certain sworn translations with which I am very familiar thanks to my extensive experience. These are always revised by a native English colleague to ensure the highest level of accuracy.

If you require a different language combination, please do not hesitate to contact me. I collaborate with a trusted network of highly-qualified translators to whom I can refer you.

How is the price of a proofreading calculated?

Proofreading services are often priced on an hourly basis, as the cost depends on the quality and clarity of the original text. Once I receive the document to be proofread, I carry out a sample review to estimate the time required. Based on this assessment, I provide a fixed quote. Please contact me if you require proofreading services or would like further information.

Which are your payment terms?

Payment is required in advance. I accept Bizum, bank transfer, and PayPal. For high-volume assignments, 50% of the fee is payable in advance, and the remaining 50% due upon delivery.
